Burt Myers claims 11th Hayes 200 at the Stadium

Of the 92 career feature wins Burt Myers has at Bowman Gray Stadium, 11 of them have now come in the Hayes Jewelers 200.

It’s the most prolific race for a driver who is arguably its most prolific champion.

“These 200 lappers are right up our alley and I guess they said we’ve won 11 of these,” said Myers, who led wire-to-wire after winning the pole in qualifying on Friday night. “This set up was perfect and it’s special to win these.”

The prolific champion, 10 times, was trailed for most of the race by another in 12-time champion in Tim Brown but not exclusively.

The choose cone meant that numerous challengers found themselves behind or beside Myers but no one could find a way around the No. 1.

“That’s the whole key,” Myers said.

All the stars of the Greatest of them All challenged Myers with defending champion Brandon Ward and another champion in Danny Bohn all taking turns.

“This was a brand-new racecar and I’m really pleased with it,” Brown said. “I’m definitely not happy with second but it’s a great racecar and a great race team and we’ll do better.”

Brown also finished second in the race two weeks removed from a fall at home where he broke some ribs and four toes tripping over kids toys.

“It affected me a little bit but not too bad,” Brown said.

Meanwhile, it was an overall tremendous night for the Myers family as in addition to the win, brother Jason finished seventh and his 15-year-old son Slate finished 12th in his first Hayes 200.

“These are the nights you never want to forget,“ the elder Myers said.

Next up is making it a season he never wants to forget too.
