Burt Myers is now the winningest driver at Bowman Gray Stadium with 108 wins.
Myers also tied long time rival Tim Brown with the most Modified wins at the track with 107. He has one Sportsman win, which gives him the all time wins record with 108. He won the pole for the first Twin-50, and in the redraw he drew to keep the pole position. He led every lap of the first main en route to the record breaking victory.
“That’s the crazy thing about the Twin-50s, man,” Myers said after the win. “I love the Twin-50s with the [choose] cone. But the top six is the fastest six cars. So that redraw, man, if you get a bad draw, you’re in bad shape. Somebody said, ‘man, you’re lucky you drew the pole’. I said, well, I kind of did earn it. The car is really good. It’s just Bowman Gray. It’s not about the best driver and the fastest car sometimes. But tonight, in the first race, we were really good. Survived the second race. Couldn’t believe we went, what did we go, 40-something laps with no caution. After that first race, I thought it was going to be bad.”
What is their gameplan to win the championship next week? Keep doing what they’ve been doing, win.
“Well, it’s like Jamie said,” Myers said. “We feel like the safest place to be is out front. So if we can sit on the pole and hopefully get out front, we can kind of dictate, hopefully, the race, the pace, and, you know, where we’re at, where we need to be. I’ve had some drama happen in the last couple years, but I really don’t think it’s anything that was self-induced. You know what I mean? I don’t really feel like I’ve not roughed anybody up. I haven’t spun anybody out. I haven’t, you know, I’ve just raced hard. But trying to race people the way I want to be raced. And we’ll see, man. Who knows that last race.”
Myers and Brown have had a tight points battle all season long. Despite the nature of the track, as well as the pressure of chasing a championship and the fact the two have been rivals for years, the duo have been exceptionally clean all season long, rarely getting in incidents or ruffling any feathers.
Myers entered the night with a ten point lead over Brown, and after a win and 14th place run in the second Twin-50, Myers has a slim points lead heading into championship night next week.
While Myers collected his 107th Modified win to start the night, Jordan Flemming got his first career Modified win in the second Twin-50.
The Flemming’s are another historic family at the stadium, and it was now Jordan’s turn to visit victory lane.
“First off, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Fleming said in victory lane on FloRacing. “Without him, this wouldn’t be possible. Crabb Smith, Thomas Taylor, CarQuest, Taylor’s Auto Parts, Smith Trucking, and my buddy Tim Kirkman, River Place Logistics, Surrey Chemicals, Peterbilt, all you guys. My wife’s here. She’s coming to this shop every night with me, every week with my baby boy, and I hope he’s watching right now at home. I love you, baby boy.”
