Burt Myers ends dominant Bowman Gray season with 11th title

Corey Latham

Burt Myers wrapped up a dominant season, with a dominant win, to claim his 11th Bowman Gray Stadium Tour Type Modified championship on Saturday night.

This was his sixth win in the AgSouth Farm Credit 150.

It came from the pole with brother Jason flanked next to him on each restart, never truly pressing the issue and making for a de facto Sunday drive to close out one of the most anxiety ridden weeks of the year.

Myers had a 26-point lead over Brandon Ward but anything can happen at the Madhouse.

“This is the most stressful week for the year because while you are leading the points, you know the dynamics around here are different because anything can happen,” Myers said.

Myers won his 97th career Stadium Tour Type race, second only to Tim Brown with 101. Myers’ 11 is also second only to Brown’s 12.

He says doing this never gets old, especially when he has been as competitive as ever.

“I guess we talked about that we wanted to be the only car sitting here tonight,” he said after winning the pole with a time of 13.279 in qualifying, then going out to win the race and the points title. “I do remember doing this in my first one in 1999 and now we get No. 11 to do it again.”

Myers is also second currently in the SMART Modified Tour championship standings which resumes Friday night at New River (formerly called Coastal Plains) now that the Stadium season has concluded.
