Jonboy survives late race chaos to win at Bowman Gray

Jonathan “Jonboy” Brown survived late race chaos at Bowman Gray to win the 100 lap Modified feature.

Brown started all the way back in 16th, but worked his way up to the top five when chaos started breaking loose in the race. After leaders wrecked each other, penalties were handed out, and an aggressive move on a restart with ten laps to go, he found himself in the lead. 

Brown spent the final stages of the race being hounded by Jordan Flemming, until with six laps to go, Jordan nearly spun Brown. Brown saved it and kept the lead, and Flemming slid into the grass, handing second place over to Tim Brown.

Tim charged hard late trying to catch Jonathan, but ran out of time, and Jonathan picked up his first win of 2026, even though he threw everything but the kitchen sink at the car right before the race.

“We ran all three practices this morning,” Jonathan said. “We ran all three practices last Saturday morning. Never was happy. We had made good speed, but I knew it needed to be better. So, kind of the same thing this morning. We threw some stuff at it the very last practice, like the last two minutes, and got it better. I’m like, ‘we can win with this.’ We left, went and ate lunch. I got to thinking about it. I’m like, no,’ I can’t leave it like that. I got to make some changes.’

“So, when the crew got here at four, I had the decking out of it. All the rear end bars completely apart. I literally changed every bar on the rear end tonight and put four different shocks and springs on it from this morning that we hadn’t run yet. And a sway bar. Then we found out we was going to have no practice. So, we just guessed, man. We literally, I was like, well, this is working. It worked in the past. This has worked in the past.”

“We didn’t have the better car, man. We had a second or third place car, I’d say. But, man, I’m going to tell you, after I went through that grass, I don’t know if the wetness of the grass pulled the tire. I don’t know what happened, but they glazed over. And I had like zero grip. Like, no front, no side bite.

“We’re at a disadvantage because the tires are so different from back when we was racing full time up here in, like, 22. The tires are way different. The setup’s way different. So, we’re behind. We’re chasing that. But we’ll figure it out. I mean, it’s just nuts and bolts. You know what I mean? We’ll figure it out. And we have no corners around here, so that’s good.”

Chris Fleming started on pole and led most of the way. While he was extremely fast, John Holleman was just as quick. The pair battled throughout the first half of the race, upping the intensity each lap. Eventually, something had to give.

That moment came with 33 laps to go. The two had been exchanging blows before the restart in the last third of the race, but things finally boiled over on the restart. After banging nerf bars in turn one, Holleman got to Flemings’ rear bumper in turn three, and when that didn’t move, he drove in even deeper when they go back to turn one, finally spinning Fleming in turn two.

Holleman took the lead, but it was short lived. On the next restart, he jumped the restart. The caution flew and he was sent to the tail of the field. That was not the most important thing that happened on the restart, however. Jordan Fleming and Burt Myers made contact, sending Myers’ spinning into the middle of the track. The points leader took a hard shot to the nose of his car and had severe damage.

Mike Speeney and Jordan now led the field on a restart with ten to go. Speeney made contact with Jordan off of four, and Jordan shoved Jonothan into the grass to get back to Speeney’s rear bumper. Jonothan stayed in it, and slipped past the two to take the lead.

Then with five laps to go, Jordan almost spun Jonathan for the lead, but Jonathan held on and picked up his first win of the year.

Tim Brown finished second and Jordan came home in third.
