With a lap time of 13.626 in Friday night time trials, Danny Bohn will lead a field of 30 Stadium Style Tour Type Modifieds to green in the Hayes Jewelers 200 at Bowman Gray on Saturday (8 p.m., FloRacing) night.
Bohn, who also lead the SMART Modified Tour championship standings with two wins through five races, is also seeking is second victory in the season opener at ‘The Madhouse’ on Saturday night. He only practiced in one session and waited for the qualifying session before returning to the track.
“I mean, I felt like the balance was really good when we were out there and the track conditions weren’t good,” Bohn told Short Track Scene. “And the first race, they usually aren’t, and I knew that I wouldn’t gain anything with the way the track was. Balance felt good so we just put the qualifying tires on and sat here watched and it didn’t feel like a great lap but apparently it was, at least compared to everyone else. No better place to start than first.”
This is also the first pole in the Hayes 200 for the 2014 track champion.
“We don’t usually qualify well in the middle of the year,” Bohn said. “I don’t know if it’s the heat in the track or the stuff they do to the tires during the year but this is our first pole in the 200 and I’m really excited about that.”
So now, Bohn has track position and will have to consider how to keep it.
“Yeah, I mean, having control of the race, it’s definitely an advantage and where you want to be,” Bohn said. “So hopefully we can stay there.”

Sportsman
Reigning Sportsman division champion Chase Robertson posted fast time for the season openeing 40 lapper just ahead of brother, Ryan.
“He broke a right rear axle and only got five laps of practice,” Chase said of Ryan. “I didn’t think he was going to get that good of a run in, so dang, that was a good lap by him.”
How was his own car?
“We haven’t touched this thing since last year, this year,” Chase said. “Dylan Ward has given me a rocket. I can’t thank him. We got Dairi-O on the car so I’m really excited for that partnership and Jerry Hunt Super Center, got to thank them for the support.”
After winning two championships, Robertson is racing a little bit of everything this year and isn’t focusing on one championship.
