Round Three for the Outlaw Bandoleros at the BoJangles’ Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway stole the show on Tuesday night as Cameron Bolin held off late charges from two competitors to take his second victory of the summer.
Bolin had just won Round Two, also in the daytime, but sat one point behind Isaak Love in the championship standings entering the race.
Bolin held off late charges from Trevor Wester and Ethan Norfleet and narrowly avoided disaster to take the victory after pole sitter and race leader Tommy Good was penalized for jumping a restart. Bolin inherited the lead from Good on lap seven and kept his No. 67 Outlaw Bandolero out front for the remainder of 20-lap race. This was the second win in a row for Bolin, and earned him the points lead after Love crashed out early.
“It sucks winning that way,” Bolin said in post-race tech. “I wish I could have been able to pass him (Good) for the lead and not being able to inherit it. You know, it is what it is. There is a box you’re supposed to go in, and apparently, somebody can’t find that.
“Last year we struggled in the daytime, and we won all three of our races in the night time. We took a big swing at things last week, and I think we found something that works.”
In the first two laps, Bolin jumped from his seventh starting position up to second, slicing through the field just as Good would later in the race.
Bolin was surprised to hear about that move, saying “Hey, that’s a new record for me, I kind of feel good about that.”
The move of the race came on lap 17 when Bolin narrowly avoided the David Sullivan and Cameron Johnson who spun in turn two. Bolin squeezed on the outside, narrowly missing Sullivan. Wester and Norfleet took evasive action, slamming on the brakes and swerving to the inside. The incident allowed Bolin to open a 2.5-second lead over the duo.
Good had an incredible charge back through the field, avoiding a 14-car pile-up that wiped out points leader Love, and saw Blaise Maddox almost end up on his lid. By hanging back, Good handily avoided the wreck and ascended from 25th to 11th. However, without any laps being completed, Good was placed back in the 21st position.
In the final 11 laps, Good sliced through the field to finish in fifth.
