Florence Motor Speedway to shutter after 2026

Florence Motor Speedway announced Tuesday there are no plans for races to be held at all in 2027 at the historic Pee Dee track.

Steve Zacharias, owner and track promoter, said in a social media post he has tried ‘everything to keep soldiering on’ since taking the helm in 2020; however, ‘each season has been increasingly difficult.’

The 4/10-mile short track is just 15 miles from Darlington, South Carolina in Timmonsville.

It’s hosted races since 1982 and came back with a bang in 2020 when it hosted a CARS Super Late Model Tour event. The CARS Tour raced there every season since, bringing in series co-owner and fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. to help support the track and invite fans to experience the asphalt track.
He even drove the iconic Budweiser 8 throwback there in 2024 for the South Carolina 400.

The most recent CARS Tour race was just over a month ago during the Labor Day weekend and featured Shane Van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch as star guest racers.

The premiere event has been the South Carolina 400, which will hold its 34th iteration in November as scheduled in addition to a monster trucks race and the South Carolina 250.

Florence also took over the Icebreaker race in 2021 after the demolition of Myrtle Beach Speedway.

“We now will solely shift our immediate focus to ending 2026 at FMS on a high note with our last three remaining events: the 2X Monster Trucks, the South Carolina 250, and the 34th Annual South Carolina 400,” Zacharias’ statement reads.

In conclusion to the statement, he wrote ‘we wish nothing but the best to all surrounding race tracks and touring series in the region for 2027 and the years to come.’
