Sam Mayer capped off a season of domination in the K1 Speed Young Lions with a dominant Round 10 win. Mayer simply out-paced his competition throughout the night.
Regardless of restart, Mayer would quickly have gaps of 1.5 seconds or more on his competition. Evidence of this can be seen in the margin of victory, 1.616 seconds over Bryson Ruff. Mayer’s sheer speed left the rest of the field fighting for second place.
“It feels so good to finally get something this big,” Mayer said. “Like, winning the Shootout is huge because all of the good people are here. D.J. Canipe did a great job. I’m so proud of him for getting that second place. But, I need to thank Ryan Farbo for everything that he’s done for me, still does for me, and will do.”
Mayer took the lead from D.J. Canipe just four laps into the race in a daring pass on the outside. He chose to restart on the outside in a bid to break away from his championship rival, Ryan Heim. Not only did Mayer take the lead from Canipe, but was untouchable the rest of the night.
Mayer said that he believed in his equipment when asked about the daring pass,
“Like I said, Farbo Motorsports puts together a great car, and it just stuck on the outside, so I knew I could do that. I just took a chance and it worked out.”
Both Canipe and Ruff finished in between the two Championship rivals. Their battle kept Heim trapped in fourth as Mayer slipped away.
Mayer, a Wisconsin native, had his signature grin in victory lane. He admitted that the Championship would not have happened without his father,
“It’s crazy. My Dad, I need to thank him especially because he brings be down here (every week), and I wouldn’t have the chance to race without him,” Mayer said. “I need to give a big thank you to him. I also need to thank God especially because he put me here in the first place. AJ Burton, Ryan Farbo for being here and helping me set up the car. And I need to thank my parents for all that they’ve done for me.”
Mayer ends the season with a 50 percent winning percentage, dominating the 2017 K1 Speed Young Lions division at the BoJangles Summer Shootout. Now he can look ahead to what the future holds, and possibly a title defense in 2018.
