Elliott Sadler comes out of retirement to race King of the Modifieds

For the first time since a NASCAR Xfinity Series race in 2019 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Elliott Sadler is going to take a green flag, this time in the King of the Modifieds SMART Tour race at South Boston Speedway.

The now 50-year-old will drive the Tour Type Modified No. 16 owned by brother Hermie Sadler and Virginia state senator Bill Stanley in the March 20-21 event that will pay $50,000 to the winner.

Sadler is the 1995 South Boston Speedway Late Model Stock champion and will follow his younger brother in the No. 16 car at Florence Motor Speedway this weekend. Sadler has 17 wins across all three national tours and is one of only 36 racers to have won a race in all three national divisions.

“Preparing for this race has brought back some fond memories I have from the early days of my racing career,” Elliott said in a press release. “The competition I raced against every weekend at South Boston Speedway was the best in the country, and it prepared me as I moved up the ladder. I am looking forward to carrying my old number and colors at a place that means so much to me.”

His brother said it was a comeback he didn’t expect to ever happen.

“Elliott had a wonderful career and has been content in his retirement from racing, so I am so honored and thrilled he has agreed to come run this race,” Hermie Sadler said. “Let’s pack the house on March 21st at South Boston Speedway to cheer on Elliott and the entire Pace-O-Matic team in the No. 16VA.”
