Saturday night’s Modified Twin 50s at Bowman Gray Stadium saw plenty of drama on and off the track.
Just 11 laps into the first race, Mike Speeney and Slate Myers started trading blows. Speeney got into Myers slightly in turn one, then in turn three Myers entered the corner shallow playing defense and Speeney got into his rear bumper once again. On the next lap heading into turn one, Myers got into the right rear of Speeney, spinning him the outside wall.
Then, five seconds later, race leader Junior Snow blew an oil line under caution, handing the lead to Burt Myers.
On the ensuing restart, most of the field was involved in a crash when Lee Jeffreys was spun off the bumper of Riley Neal. Most cars only had slight contact and were relatively unharmed.
The rest of the race was relatively calm, and Burt pulled out to a comfortable lead over Tim Brown and held on to win the first 50-lapper, his 104th career win.

“We’ve had a good race car here for years,” Burt said after his win. “In the last three years probably, we had to refocus on getting our car to qualify because we knew that if you’re going to run for points and you’re going to try to win races, you’ve got to sit on the pole with them 25-lappers to have a shot at it.
“But I ain’t going to lie, in qualifying, the car was so good that I told Jamie, “we’re going to have to make some wholesale changes because if I have to drive it like this in the race, we can’t win.” We just started throwing stuff at it. And I don’t know that we could have beat Junior Snow, to be honest with you. His car’s really good. He’s a PSR teammate, if you want to call it that. So I know how good his stuff is. So that kind of fell in our lap, and then we were able to take control of the race and hold on from there.”
The top 14 finishers were inverted for the second race, putting Lee Jeffreys and Randy Butner on the front row. Jason Myers and Slate Myers made up row two. Uncle Jason and Nephew Slate had a multi-lap side-by-side battle for several laps until Jason got loose on the exit of turn four, letting Slate make the pass on the outside for second. The duo ran right behind race leader Jeffreys until the halfway point, when Slate gave the bumper to Jeffreys in turn one to take the lead. Jason followed through to take second.
It looked like it was going to be smooth sailing for the youngest Myers, but a spin by Jeffreys with three laps to go set up a green-white-checkered finish. It wasn’t green for long as Jordan Flemming got into the Tom Buzze Jr. in turn two, and the pair spun into the outside wall, setting up a one lap shootout to end the last 50-lapper.
Slate held on to score his second career win at Bowman Gray over Jason and Neal.

“Yeah, that was great,” Slate said after his win. “For Jason to finish behind me and just to race me so clean, I don’t know if he gave me the bump or any, but I don’t know. We were pretty quick tonight, so I don’t think they had anything for us, but I was pretty discouraged after the first race. And then in that second race, I knew we were starting fourth, but I knew Jason was going to be third, so I figured we’d finish second. But when he had that mishap with Lee, and then I got around both of them.
“It was awesome to be running out here on my uncle. I can’t thank him enough. I know how much work he puts into these race cars at the shop. It’s just awesome.”
When asked about what happened between him and Speeney in the first race, Slate simply said, “No comment.”
Slate’s father Burt was excited and also proud of Slate getting his second career win, especially with it being a 50-lapper.
“He’s my son, and of course I’m going to brag on him,” Burt said. “But when he won that first race, something’s changed, and it lit a fire under him, and he wants it bad. He told me, ‘Dad, winning that second 25-lapper, I don’t discount it at all.’ Because of the formula over here, when you win a second race, a lot of people say, well, you won a second race. But with the formula, you can’t discount it. He said, ‘I want to win a 50 or a 100.’ And, yeah, he did it tonight.”
After the Twins were over, the top five cars in points from last week were teched heavily, which included Burt Mayers, Tim Brown, Mike Speeney, Junior Snow, and Riley Neal. Officials checked the MSD Ignition Control Boxes, carburetors, tire samples and had drivers take off their left side door metal.
There was even more that happened in the pits however, as Tim Brown’s crew and Junior Snow’s crew got into a fight to end the night of chaos at the Madhouse.
