Persistent fog, humidity postpones Snowball Derby to Monday afternoon

PENSACOLA, FL – After hours of weather delays at Five Flags Speedway, the 58th Snowball Derby has been postponed to Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. CT.

Shortly after the Snowflake 125 finished up in the wee hours of Sunday morning, rain began to fall once again in Pensacola. Rain continued throughout the morning postponing the original 1:00 p.m. CT start to the Snowball Derby. Once the rains lifted, track drying efforts began early in the afternoon, albeit lengthened by high humidity and an on and off mist at the track.

As the track seemed close to race ready, pre-race ceremonies began at 4:00 p.m. with driver intros as track drying finished up around the speedway. Drivers climbed in their racecars and prepared to start the 300-lap Super Late Model contest. All the while, mist began to pick up as a heavy fog set in around the 0.5-mile Five Flags Speedway.

After multiple pace laps were made, drivers determined the track was not ready to race on and cars were brought back down pit road. Covers were put on the cars and the race was never officially started. Track drying efforts started up again, but minimal progress was made thanks to the fog and humidity at the track.

The Snowball Derby will now run Monday afternoon, marking the first time in the events 58-year history that weather effected every day of on track action. With the Derby moving to Monday, the Modifieds of Mayhem, Crown Stock Invitational, Outlaws division, Pro Truck division, Pure Stock division and Sportsman division have all been moved to Tuesday.

All Monday coverage of the Snowball Derby can be watched live on FloRacing. For those planning to be in attendance, gates will open to fans at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, and 8:00 a.m. for a full slate of racing on Tuesday.
