Danny Bohn first to two SMARTies at Hickory

Danny Bohn delivered a tire management clinic on the way to his victory in the SMART Modified Tour Hickory Hundred.

It was a clinic because Bohn qualified second, fell outside of the top-five earlier the race to save his stuff, only to drive just hard enough after taking his one tire during a caution on Lap 61 to work the tight out of his car.

He made the winning move with eight laps to go, turning under Brandon Ward while they were pinned in lap traffic, and drove away to his second victory of the young campaign. Bohn actually became the first repeat winner of the season after winning at Anderson on March 6.

“This is such a tire management race,” Bohn said in Victory Lane. “You have to be disciplined. Awesome car. We’ve had two bad races, three if you count the NASCAR race (at Martinsville) but it’s not for bad cars. Everything has to come together to get to victory lane. Hell of a job by this team; awesome car.”

To with the race, Bohn used lapping Jonathan Cash as a pick.

“There was a lot of lapped traffic,” Bohn said. “I fired off really tight after that pit stop but I knew the longer I ran, the harder I ran, the more it would come in. I didn’t expect to pass him that quick or easy but it’s just a testament to this car.

“This is the most fun I’ve had driving a race car.”

Ward congratulated Bohn and Team 25.

“We’ve been racing together a lot this season and that’s a good thing,” he said. “We had a really good car tonight. This Kevin Powell Speed group does a great job every week. We started off a little behind in practice and took a swing and make it better.

“Racing hard early, trying to get stage points, I probably ran it too hard, too early.”

The official results are not currently available as there was a scoring issues during the second half of the race.
