Loftin goes flag-to-flag in caution filled Revolutionary 99

Caleb Carter

Carson Loftin led every lap in a chaotic SMART Modified Tour race at Caraway Speedway.

This year’s running of the Revolutionary 99 saw nine cautions and two red flags throughout the event. Loftin started on pole, but was never able to find a grove due to all of the cautions. On the one long green flag run the race had, it looked like points leader Danny Bohn would be able to contend for the win, but a slew of cautions at the end kept him from getting past Loftin.

“It’s really frustrating because my last one at Dominion was the same way,” Loftin said in regards to all the cautions. “It turned into [you’ve] got to be consistent on the restarts but it’s only helping me in the long run.

Super thankful for these guys. They gave me a really fast racecar. Qualified on pole, drew first, and led all the laps. Danny gave me a challenge there at the end but we were able to hold him off. Like I said, super thankful.”

The Revolutionary 99 is always one of the biggest stops on the SMART Modified Tour, and having to hold off Bohn made the win even more special for Loftin.

“The first half we were kind of riding,” Loftin said. “At the end after we put the tire on it was all out. I know Danny had a really good car and to hold him off on those last few restarts was pretty tough because he’s a phenomenal racecar driver [and] his stuff was really good tonight. So just really special.”

Loftin got a great jump from the pole to get a good lead, but the first stage saw only a few green flag laps run at a time before cautions would come out. Loftin took the stage win after a few yellows and lined up first for the restart.

The biggest moment of the night took place on the restart when Brandon Ward and Jake Crum made contact down the backstretch. The pair ran out of racing room, and Crum’s left front just tapped Ward’s right rear, sending Ward into the side of Joey Braun. Ward spun back down towards the inside wall and hit the tire barrier.

The ensuing checkup caused nearly everyone in the back half of the field to be involved, with most drivers involved having to retire from the race.

However, a 30 lap green flag run followed after the big one. During the run, Bohn drove up to fourth place and was the fastest car. The last 38 laps saw the trend of cautions every few laps return. Bohn was able to get up to second, but ran out of time before he could bring the fight to Loftin and finished second. Burt Myers rounded out the podium.
