Ron Silk Sails To Stafford NASCAR Modified Tour Victory

Justin Bonsignore maintains a healthy championship lead over Doug Coby with one race remaining.

Ron Silk continues his resurgent second half of 2020.

The 37-year-old Norwalk, Connecticut, driver picked up his second win in his last three races with a dominant performance in the NAPA Auto Parts 150 Saturday night at Stafford Motor Speedway.

It was the the 15th career win for the 2011 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion.

“It’s been a good week,” Silk said. “I knew we had a good car in practice when we were fastest in practice. Qualified second, but I knew right from the beginning that our car was really good as long as we didn’t get stuck in a bad situation and not make a bad decision taking tires. It just kind of worked out.”

Silk started the season with two finishes 10th or worse in the first three events before the No. 85 Stuart’s Automotive Chevrolet team elected to take the fourth race of the season off.

Since returning, Silk has a pair of wins, a second and a third in a four race stretch.

Silk led a race-high 79 laps, including the final 27 after taking the lead from Chase Dowling on the final restart of the night.

“I think we proved last year and have proved again this year that we’re one of the top three cars with series,” Silk said. “… The way things have been going. Things have really been going well for us. … We’ll go and try and win another one.”

Doug Coby finished second, one spot ahead of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship points leader Justin Bonsignore.

“I bet you didn’t expect to see us here after the first 80 laps,” Coby said. “… I kept going, kept plugging away, kept seeing what we wanted and we ended up second. I’m really happy. We had a fast car at the end and that’s really when you want to be fast. We’ve got something to build on for the winter and hopefully come back with a little bit better package next year.”

Bonsignore leads Coby by 27 points heading in the season finale in two weeks.

“We’re going to Thompson. … it’s comfortable,” Bonsignore said. “But we still have to go in there in there and execute. We’ll still go for the win.”

Max McLauglin was fourth and Dowling fifth.

Jon McKennedy finished sixth, followed by Ronnie Williams, Chuck Hossfeld, Matt Swanson and Tyler Rypkema.

Earlier in the day, Eric Goodale won the Pole Award but was involved in a Lap 117 accident and finished 22nd.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will finish the season with the World Series of Speedway Racing 150 at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Sunday, Oct. 11. The race will be streamed live on TrackPass on NBC Gold.
