While Matt Cox took the victory at Southern National Motorsports Park on Friday night, it was a lap 31 incident between Wyatt Miller and Matthew Laprade that became the headline of the race.

Battling for the sixth position, Miller dived to Laprade’s inside down the backstretch heading into turn three. Entering turn three, Laprade, who had traffic to his outside, began his entry into the corner as Miller attempted to make the pass.

Both cars collided, with Miller’s car ending up on top of Laprade’s car.

“I got inside him off of two and he just cleared down the track, so, very unfortunate,” Miller said after watching a replay of the incident from a camera angle showing the cars head on entering turn three. “I think I had him clear definitely in the corner. The outside doesn’t work here so I think I probably could have got a good run into three and got him.”

Matthew Laprade declined multiple requests for comment from Short Track Scene.

The incident ended Laprade’s night, while Miller rejoined the field.

Another incident took place in the same corner on the ensuing restart when Atley Weise and Alex Fleming tangled, bringing Weise’s night to an end.

When the race resumed, Caleb Johnson spun off Miller’s front bumper in turn one, bringing out the race’s final caution. Johnson would go on to finish the race in the 11th position.
