Wake County finale canceled due to excessive rainfall

Track not sure if race will be made up, complicating championship scenario in Raleigh

Friday night was supposed to see an epic championship battle in Raleigh between two-time defending Wake County Speedway champion Clay Jones and rookie phenom Carson Haislip.

Mother Nature had other plans.

“Fans, racers, and advertisers, we are sorry to have to announce that our Championship Night is canceled due to the extreme amount of rain that has fallen and with more expected later today,” a statement from the speedway on Facebook read.  “Track management is meeting to discuss whether or not to hold a make-up event in the coming weeks. This has been an extremely difficult season with multiple Friday nights affected by heavy rain and very few options for rescheduling.”

Coming into the race, Jones had an eight point advantage over Haislip in the championship standings.  If Friday night’s rainout marks the end of the season, Jones would clinch his third consecutive track championship at the quarter-mile bullring in North Carolina’s capital city.

Carteret County Speedway, which sits 133 miles away on the coast of North Carolina, has also announced the cancelation of Saturday night’s Bobby Watson Memorial – a race held each season in honor of the visionary behind the Crystal Coast speedway who passed away in 2018.
