Tommy Lemons to honor Rusty Wallace in CARS Tour Throwback 276

Two-time Martinsville 300 winner Tommy Lemons Jr. will honor Rusty Wallace next month during the Throwback 276 at Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina.

This is the third retro paint scheme revealed in advance of the debut CARS Tour Throwback event on August 5. Nolan Pope will drive a 1974 Richard Petty design while Deac McCaskill will switch to a No. 3 to highlight Dale Earnhardt’s 1984 colors.

Lemons will pilot a No. 27 modeled after Wallace’s 1990 Miller Genuine Draft Ford. Wallace carried those colors to Victory Lane in the Coca-Cola 600 and Sonoma in his final season driving for Raymond Beadle. Wallace would race at Team Penske for the remainder of his career.

Lemons has traditionally run a No. 27 in Late Model Stock competition and has battled Deac McCaskill for wins and championships during that time. McCaskill in the Wrangler No. 3 versus Lemons in the No. 27 is at the heart of what the Throwback 276 is all about.

“I grew up watching Rusty and Dale Earnhardt battle,” Lemons said. “It’s pretty cool to run his scheme. He doesn’t get the love like Dale or others when it’s come to throwback schemes, so I thought it would be awesome to run one of his No. 27 schemes from the late 80s that matched my car number.

“I really like that the throwback weekend gives us an opportunity to pay respect to everyone who has helped pave the way for racing.”

The car was designed by Graphix Unlimited.
