Jared Fryer honors Billy Hagan in CARS Throwback 276

CARS Tour

Jared Fryer will honor the Billy Hagan NASCAR Cup Series No. 44 during the CARS Tour Throwback 276 on August 5 at Hickory Motor Speedway.

Specifically, Fryer’s Late Model Stock will resemble the car Sterling Marlin drove during the 1987 Winston Cup Series season — down to a Piedmont Airlines sponsorship. Fryer has close ties to this scheme as his father, Marc Fryer, worked for the team over the years.

“This scheme has a lot of history for my team,” Fryer said. “My dad worked on the car and my current car owner Larry Coleman had family that did too, so it’s got a lot of meaning behind it. This whole throwback weekend the CARS Tour is doing is just great. It’s something special and different for us and really gets the fans involved. I’m just hoping we can be the ones to say we won the first Throwback 276.”

In addition, Jared’s current car owner is Larry Coleman, whose brother-in-law, Steve Hmiel, was Marlin’s crew chief throughout the 1987 season. That season Marlin, driving for car owner Billy Hagan, finished 11th in the standings with four top-5s and eight top-10s on the NASCAR Cup circuit.

Routh Signs will provide the design and installation of the #44 machine at the inaugural Throwback 276. Fryer won his first Late Model Stock race earlier this season at Dominion Speedway and is looking to take this car into Victory Lane in two weeks.

In addition to Marlin, the car was also take to the 1984 Cup Series championship by Terry Labonte, but also piloted by John Andretti and Hagan himself.
