Corey Heim’s South Boston sweep is under NASCAR R&D review

Corey Heim’s breakout moment at South Boston Speedway is currently on hold.

The 16-year-old bested the likes of Philip Morris and Peyton Sellers on Saturday night at South Boston Speedway, sweeping both ends of a 75-lap Late Model Stock doubleheader. The victories came in his first two Late Model Stock appearances in a car built by four-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Lee Pulliam.

Heim is a Super Late Model driver, most commonly associated with the Southern Super Series.

Following an at-track review of his No. 78 on Saturday night, Heim’s car was found to have too much camber and toe in the rear-end. The car was checked by tape measure and track officials deemed it to be out of tolerance. According to a report in, the Heim car was considerably beyond the accepted tolerance:

According to an off the record conversation with an NWAAS official the tolerance usually accepted is 1/8 of an inch. Heim’s checked in at 3/4 of an inch via a measuring tape. The measurement equates to roughly 3 degrees of camber according to the official’s opinion.

In an interview with Short Track Scene, Pulliam claimed that on-track contact and damage contributed to the extra camber but disagreed with the reading of their inspection.

It was that sentiment that led to a compromise.

The track agreed to collect components from the rear end and send it to the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina for a more thorough analysis.

“The track doesn’t have an inspection jig to get an accurate reading,” Pulliam said. “They have a different way of checking the tolerance and my reading was different. So we’re going to send it to NASCAR so they can check it on a jig to be accurate and fair.”

Pulliam is one of the faces of Late Model Stock competition and has a largely sterling reputation for fast cars that pass inspection. The current full-time CARS Tour contender hopes this incident doesn’t off-set the positive attention Heim generated in his Late Model Stock debut.

“He’s a good kid,” Pulliam said. “He really did a good job last night. I hate that we’re having to deal with this.”

The results of the R&D Center inspection could come out as early as Monday. Ryan Repko finished second in both races on Saturday night and would be credited with the wins of NASCAR deems the No. 78’s rear-end as non-compliant.
