Tim Brown and Mike Speeney picked up the Twin 25 wins at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday night.
Brown and Burt Myers started on the front row for the first Twin 25, and that is how they ran all race long. The two most winningest drivers at The Madhouse had a hard fought battle for the win basically all race, with Myers getting into the rear bumper for Brown repeatedly. However it was not enough to get past him, and Brown held on to claim his 107th career Modified win at Bowman Gray.
“Just [had] a great race car,” Brown said after the win. “I was trying to save my tires for this next 25-lap race. If you use it all up there, you don’t have anything to live for the next one. Had a great race car, set on the pole, second win of the year. Just a great night, man, a great night. Hopefully we can get out of here with a top eight or a top five in this second one. Everybody thinks, oh man, go win it. You ain’t going to win it with a caliber of cars here. We’re just going to go try to not tear it up, make for an easier week this week.
The top eight finishers were inverted to set the starting lineup for the second race, placing Riley Neal on pole and Mike Speeney to his outside.
Neal led the opening lap of the event, but Speeney took the lead on lap two after moving Neal up the track in turns one and two. The next lap, Neal returned the bumper and made contact with Speeney in turn one and on the exit of turn two. Speeney kept enough momentum on the outside line after the contact to keep the lead though, and led the rest of the way to win the second 25-lapper.
“We kind of got ourselves in a hole with qualifying,” Speeney said after his win. “We’re still trying to figure that deal out. We kind of had to bully through the field in the first race. I knew I had to get to at least eighth. And we got to seventh and got a lucky draw. That put us outside pole. I knew Riley was going to run me hard. It was a lot of fun racing him. He had plenty of opportunities to spin me, and he didn’t. So I appreciate that. The car was good, but I know we can improve on it. So really happy with how the night turned out from how 7 o’clock was earlier today.”
