Slate Myers makes history at Bowman Gray

Corey Latham

Slate Myers became the fourth generation of Myers’ as well as the youngest driver to win in a Modified at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday night.

The second round Twin 25 races took place at the Madhouse on Saturday and both races were won by a Myers. Jason Myers won the first 25-lapper and his nephew Slate claimed his first career win in the second Twin 25, joining his father, Burt Myers, uncle Slate, grandfather Gary, great grandfather Billy, and Billy’s brother Bobby. Slate is 17 years old, now the youngest winner of a Modified feature at Bowman Gray.

Jason won the first Twin 25 after starting second. Tim Brown started on pole, but a bump from Burt coming to the green flag caused him to spin the tires and let Jason pass him on the outside. Jason led every lap, but Brown kept within striking distance the whole race. Brown gave Jason a few bumps late in the race, but was careful to not hit him too hard and kept it clean. Jason held on to claim the win, his 59th at the Stadium.

“I got redemption tonight!” Jason exclaimed in victory lane on FloRacing. “That was a hard [pill] to swallow last week; having the fastest car and getting outrun. I made up for it tonight. I might’ve had a little better car, but I was playing defence and just parking the corner on Tim and making him hit me. I figured that was playing it safe so I wouldn’t bust my hind end.”

After a top 14 invert, Slate started on pole for the second race. Slate led every lap uncontested in the 25-lapper, taking the win and making history.

“I’m speechless,” Slate said after the win. “I’m still waiting to wake up from the dream. With all the family history over here, it means a ton to get my first win here. It’s awesome. I don’t even know what to say. 17 [years old]. I’m actually graduating next Friday.

“So the first race, I mean, I couldn’t really get a good feel for the car since the people we were around. But then for the second race, my good buddy, Mike Queen, tuned on it a little bit, and I heard I got a pretty good lead. I was trying to stay out the rear view as much as possible.”

The weight of the win is not lost on the young driver either. Of course he races against his father and uncle, but much more of his family was in attendance as well, making this win that much more special.

“I was carrying the checkered flag, and on the back stretch, I looked up, and I saw Phillip Smith and my grandpa, Gary Myers, and I got a little choked up a little bit. I didn’t shed a tear, but I got a little choked up. I mean, that’s just, it’s crazy. I don’t even know what to say. And when they let my window net down, Jason and Dad were the first ones there. It’s just awesome.

“I definitely don’t have any stress right now. I’m sure it’ll come back to me, but I don’t know. It was a good night.”

When told he was going to be having conversations after winning even more now, he replied, “I hope so. Hopefully not here. Hopefully on Sunday.”
