Bohn wins as Speeney vs Myers continues at Bowman Gray

Corey Latham

Danny Bohn won the Kevin Powell Motorsports 100 at Bowman Gray Stadium with a damaged car while Mike Speeney and Slate Myers tangled once again.

Bohn started the race in 11th, but wasted no time driving through the field. On lap 48, Riley Neal got loose under Bohn in turn one while battling for fourth and made contact with him. Bohn had to correct the wheels so far to the right it actually damaged the car, but nevertheless he was able to continue his march to the front, taking the lead with a pass on the outside on Lee Jeffreys on a restart with 31 laps to go.

Late in the race, Junior Snow ran down Bohn and spent the last few laps beating the back bumper off of Bohn’s car, but was unable to make the pass, and Bohn took the checkered flag.

“When me and Lee got together, I cut the wheel to the right, and after that, I thought I was getting a flat,” Bohn said. “It broke the strut rod off, so that’s why we got a little bit tight there at the end, but [it was an] awesome car. We should have been two for two. I gave up the 200 [by] missing a gear, but it’s a hell of a year, like, that’s our fourth win.”

Even though it got rough at the end, Bohn enjoyed the tough battle with Snow.

“It was hard racing, I don’t blame him,” Bohn said. “I knew I was parking it in the center of the corner, and I thought I was getting a flat or something was broken, obviously something was broke, but, yeah, he could have cleaned me out, but he did a good job. I appreciate him not spinning me out, I was pretty damn sideways, I can say that, but, you know, hope the fans enjoyed it. We ran side-by-side for a lot of laps, so, yeah, good night.

The biggest moment of the race came with 16 laps to go. While fighting to defend third after a restart, Myers was spun off the bumper of Speeney in turn one. Several cars piled in as Myers’ car sat perpendicular to traffic, blocking the track, resulting in a red flag.

Under the red flag, Myers walked up to Speeney’s car and had a talk with him. After some head shaking and finger pointing, the conversation ended and Slate walked back to his car.

The Speeney and Myers rivalry was one of the most notable things all season last year at The Madhouse, albeit it was Slate’s father, Burt, that was in the rivalry with Speeney. So far it has continued this year, but this time with Slate. In the season opening Hayes Jewelers 200, Speeney and Slate made contact, resulting in a big crash late in the race, and there is no love lost after tonight’s incident.

Speeney felt like it was just an accordion effect that stacked the front four cars up and caused Myers to spin off his bumper.

“To me, he checked up, hit the [No.] 69, because the [No.] 69 hit Danny Bohn, so I hit him, checked up, and he just couldn’t save it,” Speeney said. “I did the same thing to his dad when we all stacked up when he was in front of me, and his dad saved it, and I let off, and we kept going. I think I did it to Burt like four times. But if I drove through him, I would have been in his door and not driving around him, so he can whine and complain all he wants. He’s just another car out there.

“When you stack up like that, as a driver, you’re basically preparing to get hit from behind. So, you’re just waiting for it. I can’t control the stack-up three cars in front of me. But I can control not plowing through the guy in front of me. You know, I’ll hit him, but then, when you get enough time to get on the brakes, you try to slow up. That’s what happened to us at the 200 when Jason [Myers]came across my nose. I slowed up for him, but everybody else piled into me, and then I piled into him so, with the stack-ups the way this racing is, it’s tough.”

Speeney doesn’t plan on approaching racing with Slate any differently, and notes how he and Burt have raced each other this year.

“Me and Burt race fine,” Speeney said. “As long as Burt races me like I would race him, we can be aggressive. I’m okay with aggressive. But what I did not appreciate Slate trying to drive through my left rear when I got around him on the outside going into [turn] three. He tried to plow through me, and I was able to keep it straight. That kind of ticked me off a little bit, but it is what it is. I kind of expected it. I didn’t purposely turn him, and I didn’t go after him.

“And it’s just unfortunate there’s three of them on the racetrack. You’ve got quite a bit more chances to run into a last-name Myers because there’s three of them. I mean, if there was three Speeney’s here, a lot of people would be running into Speeneys. So it is what it is.”

Slate felt like Speeney never really gave him a chance to save the car.

“We had a really, really good car,” Slate said after the race. “Huge shout out to all the guys, we had it on the rail tonight. I came up off the corner, I looked at my spot mirror, and I was clear. I got in front of him right before the start/finish line, got on the [No.] 69, and then just got piledrove by the [No.] 10, and he’s still in the gas on my back bumper, at some point, it’s got to stop. I hate it for all the guys, I hate it for all my partners and sponsors, just wish the night would have ended better than it did, I feel like we had a top three car.”

When asked what it would take to make it stop, Slate said: “There’s only one way to make it stop. We’ll see him next weekend.”

Junior Snow, Jason Myers, and Burt Myers all took the fan challenge after qualifying in the top four. Since Snow and Burt both finished in the top four, they will split the $3,000 prize.
