Gio Ruggiero claims second World Series win of the week

Jason Reasin

The Super Late Model World Series of Asphalt championship continued to run through Gio Ruggiero and Brent Crews on Wednesday.

The pair of Donnie Wilson Motorsports teammates entered the night separated by two points, with Crews ahead of Ruggiero, and they would start on the front row together after an invert of 3, that negated a Derek Kraus pole.

Ruggiero beat Crews into Turn 1 and led wire-to-wire to become the first repeat winner of the week following victories by Gus Dean and Bubba Pollard.

“We both had really good cars at the end,” Ruggiero said. “I just had to stay disciplined in wrapping the line in 3 and 4. I put him in dirty air a little bit too, which helped as well. It’s a super hard track to pass at.

“These Donnie Wilson 22 guys have worked hard all week and ready to win the 100 lapper tomorrow.”

With the win, Ruggiero moves into a tie with Crews but owns the tiebreaker due to his wins.

The 100-lap championship race has been moved to Thursday due to the impending weather expected on Saturday night.

“Just have to have a clear mind and not worry about it,” Ruggiero said. “Work hard and let it takes care of itself.”
