He wouldn’t admit it, but the 95KSJ95 on Saturday night might have been the easiest day at work in a Super Late Model for Jeff Choquette.
He took the lead from Chase Purdy on Lap 21 and never looked back, leading the rest of the way to win his second Super Late Model race of the season and first in the Southern Super Series in 12 starts. It was also his first victory at Mobile International Speedway since the 2012 SuperSeal 200.
The Jett Construction No. 9 was the class of the field and won by three seconds over Stephen Nasse.
“As good as it looked, it’s still nerve-wracking,” Choquette said in Victory Lane. “You never know if you’re going to get a caution. I’m glad we didn’t have to deal with that and that it stayed green.
“Stephen Nasse is a hell of a wheelman and so is everyone else here. You don’t know what could happen until the end.”
Nasse appeared to get trapped behind lapped cars several times in the race, as Choquette lapped all but four drivers, but he didn’t blame the traffic. In fact, Nasse said he was saving tires for a caution that never came once it became apparent that he couldn’t catch Choquette on pace alone.
“I knew I was going to need a caution to catch him,” Nasse said. “I was just waiting on it and it never came. The lap cars didn’t hold me up at all.”
Donnie Wilson finished fourth and claimed the $1,000 bonus for the best average finish in the two Gulf Coast Doubleheader races at Pensacola and Mobile respectively. Nasse retained his championship points lead, which guarantees him an automatic berth into the U.S. Short Track Nationals at Bristol Motor Speedway.
“That was our main goal and now we can spend the rest of the season chasing the Southern Super Series championship,” Nasse said. “But right now, we got to focus on Bristol and make the best of our guaranteed starting spot.”
Meanwhile, Choquette has become an elite driver once again with the JETT team. It’s his second win this year in the No. 9 and he’s been competitive everywhere he’s gone. In short, life is pretty good right now for the 30-year-old.
“Yeah, it’s awesome,” Choquette said. “It’s not every day that you can get into a family race car with Progressive Engines under the hood. Whenever you get it, you take it.”
