Cody Coughlin strengthened his CRA Super Series championship aspirations on Monday afternoon by scoring a victory in the World Stock Car Festival at Wincheter Speedway in Indiana. He also may have declared himself the favorite to win next month’s Winchester 400.

Coughlin charged through the field from his sixth-place starting position and took the lead from a dominant Dalton Sargeant on Lap 71 of the 100-lap showdown. He then held Sargeant off on a restart with 10 to go and surged ahead to his fourth ARCA/CRA victory of the season.

This is his second victory in this event, repeating his 2014 accomplishment.

That coupled with a fourth-place finish by Dalton Armstrong means that Coughlin will narrowing extend his championship lead with two races remaining.

Sargeant spent the majority of the race running nose-to-tail over Armstong but that changed on Lap 65 when the provisional championship runner-up fell to third and then spun on the backstretch. That set-up a series of cautions and restarts in which Coughlin excelled.

The major incident of the race occurred on Lap 71 when Hunter Jack, Rick Turner and Jeff Fultz were each involved in a big crash on the frontstretch. Turner’s car caught fire and Fultz’s machine had to be carried away via a tow truck. Expected contenders Todd Gilliland and Donnie Wilson were also involved in crashes throughout the day to change the complexion of the race.

The next event for the CRA Super Series will take place on Sept. 25 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana. The Winchester 400 is the season finale and is scheduled for Oct. 9.
