Morris capitalizes on chaos, wins UARA Sportsman Citrus

Alexa Cuzzone

Brandon Morris captured his second checkered flag of 2026 in the UARA Sportsman Series following a chaotic race at Citrus County Speedway, making the most of other’s mistakes and misfortune. This win also marked an achievement as he became the first driver to eclipse ten wins in the UARA Sportsman competition.

Morris took the win ahead of Tim Sozio and Jimmy Frazier following a stroke of luck on two restarts that saw penalties assessed to Daniel Webster and Adam Briggs, allowing him to go from fifth to first in a matter of minutes.

“That was a big goal of mine, having the most starts and racing as long as we have in this series, that was something I really wanted to get, so I’m really happy we got it,” Morris stated. “I have no idea how we won tonight. Thank you to Sozio for not just shipping me, man. We were so tight, I was doing what I had to do to keep the car on the bottom, having to lift early and let it roll to get back to the gas.”

Morris started the race in fourth and fell down the order to ninth, while Daniel Webster took the lead from Rice Robinson, who set the pace for the opening 15 laps. The reigning Full Throttle 125 winner started to put on a clinic after passing Ro by staying firm in the lead, however, his progress was continuously stopped by cautions. Dave Werning, Bobby Mobley, and Kipp McVey all spun on their own, with the latter two of three being involved in a multi-car accident, collecting Fallon Goolsby. McVey went for another slide on the backstretch, unaware of the butterfly effect to come.

Sozio methodically made his way up to second, behind Webster, for the following restart. Webster launched in the restart zone and gained a massive advantage on Sozio, to which the officials waved off and penalized Webster to the rear of the field. Adam Briggs inherited the position left vacant by Webster for the following restart, only to be handed a restart violation of his own, joining Webster at the back.

The misfortune of Webster and Briggs allowed Brandon Morris to take initiative on the inside lane for what would be the final restart of the night, and he then outlasted the pressure of Tim Sozio for the final 21 laps of the night. “It was a tough situation, I’ve never seen that happen before where they decide the inside line keeps moving up,” Sozio said.

“I thought if the leader got penalized, that second should get the lead, but it just didn’t work out that way. There was no outside line, so that made it pretty difficult for us. I was able to get down, but Brandon [Morris] is a really good driver. He’s been doing Sportsman racing a long time, and was able to just block the bottom, so I couldn’t get around him.”

Sozio made sure Morris’ win didn’t threaten his championship lead with a runner-up finish of his own. On the other end of it, neither Webster nor Briggs were pleased with the penalties from race control. Webster expressed his displeasure.

“I didn’t feel like I jumped. Sozio started to nose ahead of me, so I released the brake pedal and timed getting back next to him right when I fired, so I had a bit of momentum, but I was making up for him being ahead of me, getting back right. It’s just frustrating to bring such a good race car, dominate the race, and drive away every restart.”

Morris joins James Seeright as the only two drivers to win multiple races in the 2026 season, while also beginning to close the points lead currently held by Tim Sozio, with the next stop for the UARA Sportsman Series at Mobile International Speedway on July 25th.

Rex Struble was the class of the field in Pure Stocks, leading all 40 laps with Doug Miller as the only competition to threaten his win.

Cody Benoit took the win in Crown Vics despide finishing third, being the benefactor of disqualifications for Blaze Roland and Roger Blevins in post-race tech inspection.
