Southern National Motorsports Park to debut controlled cautions at Thanksgiving Classic

One of the most highly anticipated Late Model Stock races of the year just added a new twist, as Southern National Motorsports Park will bring “Controlled Cautions” to the 200-lap Thanksgiving Classic.

A staple in Super Late Model racing, controlled cautions will allow teams that decide to come down pit road the ability to do so without losing positions to other pitting cars. While pitting cars will lose position to cars staying on track, the strategy element will for sure come in to play with teams having the opportunity to change two tires at some point throughout the duration of the race.

Controlled Cautions are just another addition to the excitement The Thanksgiving Classic is sure to produce. Along with the caution rule change, Southern National Motorsports Park will also feature a payout of up to $20,000 as a part of the returning “Racing Roulette,” eligible for drivers that agree to pay an increased entry fee.

Southern National Motorsports Park owner Michael Diaz hopes these additions to the November 25th event will add excitement for both fans, and drivers.

“After running my son Mason in a Super Late Model race with controlled cautions earlier this season, I knew we needed to add it to the Thanksgiving Classic,” said Diaz.  “It gave me so much more to watch during the race and see how the drivers and teams strategized to best position themselves during the event really made it more exciting. Our fans have never seen this type of race play out and I think it will be a treat for them.”

Not all cautions will utilize the new system, as some will serve as “quickie” cautions, designed just to reset the field and get back to green. Outside of those quickie cautions, the remainder will be controlled. Should the race have a long green flag run, a controlled competition caution would come out, sometime between 40 and 55 laps after the prior green flag.

“It’s going to be different for our competitors and our fans,” continued Diaz.  “We’ve used competition cautions before but this time they have some meaning beyond just gathering the field back together.  I think this will add a level of excitement to every caution except the quickie cautions which will just allow us to resume right away.  I’m excited to see how it plays out and what drivers or teams will employ the perfect strategy to win the race.”
