In the first race weekend at South Boston Speedway since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a familiar face was victorious in the track’s Late Model Stock Car division.
Five-time South Boston track champion Peyton Sellers endured two different Late Model races on Saturday but both of them ended with Sellers finding his way into the winner’s circle.
“It just feels good to be back at South Boston Speedway,” Sellers said after the race. “To come here and start off the season with two wins is a big feather in our cap. These season-openers are hard to win because everybody works so hard all winter long to build their cars fast.”
The afternoon started out in traditional fashion for Sellers, who effortlessly obtained the pole position in group qualifying on his first lap and proceeded to lead wire-to-wire to claim the first Late Model checkered flag of South Boston’s 2021 season.
After starting in ninth following the invert, Sellers methodically worked his way back to the front of the field but suffered a temporary setback when he collided with Jacob Borst, which relegated him to 11th after 18 laps.
Sellers was not deterred by his misfortune and resumed his charge to the lead. With 29 laps to go, Sellers caught Landon Pembelton and passed him for the top spot, going uncontested the rest of the way for his second victory on the day.
With two victories already under his belt in 2021, Sellers is now turning his attention towards the next event at South Boston that will take place on April 3, which will feature a 100-lap Late Model race to go along with the SMART Modified Tour.
