Carteret County Speedway to Host Davey Allison Memorial on Saturday

Carteret County Speedway will honor the memory of NASCAR legend Davey Allison, who passed away 25 years ago, on July 28th with the Moore’s Barbeque Davey Allison Memorial 280.

Allison, the son of NASCAR legend and Hall of Fame driver Bobby Allison, is a former Daytona 500 champion who drove car no. 28 for Robert Yates Racing before passing away in a helicopter accident in Talladega, Alabama on July 13, 1993.  Carteret County Speedway, which boasts being something of a museum to racing history, will honor his memory.  Bobby Allison, NASCAR Hall of Fame driver, will be in attendance as will Larry McReynolds, Fox Sports analyst and crew chief for Allison during his career.

“The Allison family is legendary in NASCAR racing,” Carteret County Speedway track owner Bobby Watson said.  “This being the 25th Anniversary of his death, and having Bobby Allison coming, we decided to make this race a tribute to Davey Allison’s memory.  He was a great guy and a great driver.  Larry McReynolds is coming and he was Davey Allison’s crew chief, and we’ve got Bobby Allison coming as well.”

“Davey was everybody’s hero,” Bobby Allison commented.  “He made friends as he went along.  People enjoyed him and being his friend.  He continued to compete at a high level and made everybody happy.  I think it’s neat the track is having a special event to honor him and I enjoy Davey’s memories and activities going on.”

Twin Late Model 50-lappers will headline the Davey Allison Memorial.

To honor Allison, Bradley McCaskill and Ronald Renfrow will both run throwback paint schemes.  McCaskill will run a throwback scheme honoring Bobby Allison while Renfrow, making his first ever start at Carteret County Speedway, will run a throwback scheme honoring Davey Allison.  Both cars will be designed and wrapped by McCaskill who is the proprietor of Grafix Unlimited in Raleigh.

“It’s fun to mix it up a little bit from the normal day to day stuff,” McCaskill said.  “When designing these wraps, I also get to learn a lot about the history of each driver as we are researching them.”

Renfrow was a fan of Davey Allison when he was younger.

“Davey was always someone I looked up to, on and off the track,” Renfrow remarked.

Along with running their Late Models with the Allison throwback schemes on July 28^th, the two drivers will also run their respective schemes at Hickory Motor Speedway.

The Davey Allison Memorial will also feature a $500-to-win Champ Kart feature, thrusting the division into the spotlight at Carteret County Speedway.  Additionally, the racing program features Mini-Stocks, Legends, Mini Cups, Jr. Mini Cups and U-CARs.  The feature races will add up to 280 green flag laps of racing.

The Moore’s Barbeque Davey Allison Memorial will commence shortly after 7pm with pre-race festivities beginning at 6pm.  Tickets are $15 for adults while kids ages 10 and under get in free.
