Brandon Clements continues to reign at Carteret County Speedway, scoring his fourth Late Model victory of the season on Saturday night in the Moore’s Barbeque Davey Allison Memorial.
Clements held back challenges from Chris Burns and Mini Tyrrell. On lap 30 of 50, Tyrrell was able to advance his way to the top spot. A couple laps later, as the battle for the lead intensified, the top three cars of Tyrrell, Burns, and Clements all entered the corner three wide. Burns and Tyrrell went around sustaining damage but returned to the race after fixing their cars during a rain delay.
When the race resumed, Clements then battled Jason York, a former winner of the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway. York got around Clements on lap 34, but Clements muscled his way back around York. York ended up getting out of shape and nearly spinning but was able to keep control and hang on to finish third.
“We had a pretty good car,” Clements said. “That late restart, we got a little free before the wreck with Mini [Tyrrell] and Chris. The car was really good all night. Jason got into us a little bit there. I overdrove the corner over there and that was totally my fault. It definitely wasn’t intentional, I backed out of the throttle. I just hate to see two cars get torn up.”
York was upset with Clements over the contact in their battle for the win, saying after the race, “he’s about to see just how dirty I can be.” He came back to finish third.
Tyrrell finished the race in second after being involved in the mishap with Burns and Clements (which also collected TJ Barron).
“I had an amazing car,” Tyrrell said. “My mama always told me, this is a quote from Chase Elliott, ‘if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it’ and exactly what just happened there.”
Chris Burns rallied to finish fourth while Gerald Benton rounded out the top-five.
The second planned Late Model twin race ended up being rained out, despite the track’s relentless efforts to resume the race.
