Spencer Davis is chasing a win in his home state in the World Crown 300 at Cordele this Saturday.
The Dawsonville, Georgia driver is back with Ben Kennedy Racing for this event for a race that is very special to him.
“Being from Georgia, this used to be one of the races we [went] to growing up,” Davis said. “When it was at Gresham Motorsports Park, it was definitely a crown jewel race. You’d have guys coming all the way from almost Canada all the way down here to race it, and it’s cool that it’s back. This is the start of the crown jewel season right here, so [this is] definitely one of them, especially [bring my] hometown race.”
Davis feels good about his chances this weekend. He won the CARS Pro Late Model Tour Throwback Classic at Hickory early this year, collecting $30,000 and the biggest win of his career. He believes if he wins at Cordele that it would be right up there with his Hickory win.
“To get a premier Super [Late Model] win in any aspect is always great,” Davis said. “Winning at one of the, well, I think the last active asphalt track in Georgia [would be] sweet, too. Winning any 300 lap race, is just a phenomenal deal, phenomenal feat. It takes a whole crew to do it, so if we can pull off a win here on Saturday night’s World Crown 300 in our Ben Kennedy Racing [No.] 96 Chevrolet, it’d be awesome.
“It’s just a different animal, different type of racing. That Hickory win was definitely the biggest of my career to date. Winning the World Crown 300 would be right up there with it. There’s a lot of great names that are on this winner list from previous tracks, and to add my name to it would be awesome.”
This weekend is also serving as a little bit of a precursor to the Snowball Derby. Like several drivers, Davis is hoping to get a good notebook and build momentum in the 300 lap race.
“It’s about getting into the rhythm of these long races,” Davis said. “[When] we picked our Super schedule kind of at the beginning of the year, [we] definitely [scheduled it] at the end to get in the rhythm for the Snowball Derby and to start meshing well together as a team for these long races. We’re used to the 100, 150 lap races, and the Pros are Super, so getting back in the swing of things is going to be the main thing, and honing in the skill of running these long races again.”
The World Crown 300 takes place on Saturday, October 25 at Cordele Motor Speedway. Racing starts at 6 p.m. ET with the last chance race. Fans can purchase tickets online or catch the action live on RacingAmerica.
