Snowball Derby Best Appearing Car Award gets overhaul

The 57th Annual Snowball Derby is less than 30 days away and HDFive/Horvath Design and Five Star Race Car Bodies are reminding teams to finalize their entries for this year’s Best Appearing Car Award.

The award will be re-imagined this year, switching from a fan vote determining the winner, to being judged by a panel with an emphasis on design, print quality, and installation. The contest will highlight the artistic and technical excellence behind wrapping a car. The evaluation criteria will take into account three main aspects:

  • Design and Creativity: Judges will look for unique concepts, bold themes, and captivating aesthetics.
  • Print Quality: The clarity, precision, and vibrancy of the printed wrap will be closely examined.
  • Installation: Attention to detail in the application process, ensuring a flawless finish, will be a key factor.

“This isn’t just a beauty contest — it’s about honoring the full scope of effort, skill, and teamwork involved in creating a standout race car look,” said Tim Horvath II of HDFive. “As we mark our 10th year at the Snowball Derby, we wanted to spotlight the teams that consistently push the boundaries of design.”

Part of the new format is that teams can earn bonus points by incorporating elements of the number five into their design. This is to recognize the connection between HDFive, Five Star Race Car Bodies, and the event venue, Five Flags Speedway, all of which include the number ‘five.’

Whether it is using the number itself, patterns with five elements, or creative representations (five snowballs for example), this adds an extra layer of creativeness to the competition, and gives designers something to look to include in their design.

“With the significance of the number five in the names of our companies and the track, we thought it would be a fun way to challenge teams and pay homage to this unique synergy,” said Horvath.

Separate Best Appearing Car awards will be presented for the Snowball Derby and the Snowflake 100 categories. The winner of the Snowball Derby Best Appearing Car will receive a brand-new Five Star Race Car body and a $500 marketing kit from HDFive.

The winner for the Snowflake 100 portion will receive a Five Star Race Car Bodies reskin kit and a $500 marketing kit from HDFive. These awards will celebrate the craftsmanship behind each car’s appearance, as well as offer tools to help the teams continue enhancing their designs.
