Shaw Scores Second PASS Win Of 2021 At WMMP

The five-time PASS North champion earned his first win since 2014 at the track where he honed his skills early in his career.

DJ Shaw has had a quiet season thus far. Saturday night, the five-time Pro All Stars Series champion served notice that he’s still a threat.

Shaw fended off “Thrillin’” Dillon Moltz to win the Foley Oil & Propane 150 at White Mountain Motorsports Park, clinching his second PASS North win of 2021.

And behind them, six-time PASS North champion Johnny Clark finished third, easing closer to a seventh title of his own.

PASS’ first race since the Oxford 250 was threatened by weather, with rain slowing on-track activities a couple times. The rain ultimately moved on, allowing the track to avoid a second rainout this year.

Shaw was quick all day, pacing practice and winning his heat. The Center Conway, N.H. veteran was forced to start midpack, courtesy of PASS’ past-winner handicap, but Shaw found his way to the point regardless.

Avenging an early exit in the Oxford 250, Shaw took the checkers over half a second ahead of Moltz.

The high-banked quarter-mile in North Woodstock, N.H. has a special significance for Shaw, who raced Late Models at the track before ascending to Super Late Model and NASCAR competition. Saturday’s win was his fifth PASS win at WMMP, though his first since 2014.

In finishing second, Moltz overcame his own Oxford 250 disappointment. Three weeks after failing to make the 250 field, Moltz matched the best PASS performance of his career. Moltz, like Shaw, has found plenty of success at WMMP. The Connecticut native won last year’s American-Canadian Tour Midsummer Classic 250, nursing one set of tires through the whole feature, and has scored all four of his PASS top-five finishes at the track.

Clark’s third-place finish was far and away the best of the PASS full-timers, aiding the two-time winner as he marches toward another series championship.

Joey Doiron, who won Friday’s Granite State Pro Stock Series feature at Star Speedway, reunited with car owner Wright Pearson for Saturday’s race. The defending race winner finished fourth. Trevor Sanborn was fifth.

Rookie Jake Matheson, Beech Ridge Motor Speedway racer Joe Pastore, Jeremy Davis, Derek Ramstrom and Oxford Plains Speedway veteran Alan Wilson rounded out the top ten.

Among the series full-timers, Kate Re managed a 12th-place finish, while Dan Winter came home 14th. Clark remains the only driver to enter all twelve races who has a feature win this season.

Shaw, the reigning PASS North champion, skipped a race earlier this season, taking him out of title contention early. In that respect, Shaw’s trademark consistency has been largely invisible. With one more start, Shaw would likely be looking to tie Clark’s six titles with another of his own.

Instead, Shaw has shared his focus with an ACT title run. Racing for car owner Arnie Hill, Shaw leads the ACT Late Model Tour points race with three events remaining on the schedule. Before 2020, Shaw had only a handful of starts on the venerable Vermont tour.

Five more events await on the PASS schedule. All five are at tracks where Shaw has won before.

He may not be chasing PASS points, but he will certainly be in the hunt wherever he races next.
