Keelan Harvick withstands late-race pressure to win Mark Galloway Shootout at Evergreen Speedway

Keelan Harvick held off a hard-charging Kevin Harvick to win Saturday night’s $15,000-to-win 150-lap Mark Galloway Shootout at Evergreen Speedway, as the CARS Tour West’s Northwest and Southwest Pro Late Model divisions came together for the opening round of the Hoosier Tire West Triple Crown Challenge.

After finishing one spot short in the event a year ago, Harvick withstood constant pressure from his father throughout the second half of the race to earn his first Pro Late Model victory in the Pacific Northwest.

“I was trying to just keep focused on myself, not look in the mirror and to hit all my marks, Harvick said. “The Rackley WAR guys brought me a really fast car and I was just trying to capitalize on what I lost from last year here.”

Entering the weekend, Keelan Harvick’s Northwest results had not reflected the speed he had shown throughout the season, averaging a 17th-place finish. Saturday night’s victory changed that while providing a confidence boost after several frustrating outings.

“It was really awesome to get this win, we really haven’t had good luck this year up here,” Harvick said. “So tonight is just really good for my confidence.”

Saturday’s race also marked the opening leg of the Hoosier Tire West Triple Crown Challenge, a three-race mini-series contested during the second half of the season at three designated events: Evergreen Speedway, Colorado National Speedway in August and the Pro Late Model season finale at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway in October.

The Triple Crown championship is awarded to the car that accumulates the most points across the three designated events. Points are awarded in each Triple Crown race just as they are during a regular CARS Tour West event, but cars must compete in all three races to be eligible for the $20,000 bonus.

Thomas Stanford earned the pole after setting a new track record in qualifying and led the field of 36 to the green flag.

Stanford led the opening laps before Buddy Shepherd worked his way around him to take command. Shepherd’s advantage was short-lived, however, as Keelan Harvick quickly reeled him in before taking over the top spot.

The pair raced nose-to-tail until the first caution flew on Lap 31 when Ryan Phipps spun into the grass after contact in the midfield entering Turn 3 before sliding back up the racetrack, where Rowdy Rupinski had nowhere to go, making heavy contact with Phipps and ending both drivers’ nights.

The ensuing restart was slowed almost immediately when Southwest points leader Kyle Keller spun in Turn 1 following three-wide contact in traffic. Keller continued without damage.

As Keelan Harvick set the pace after the field went back green, Shepherd settled into second while defending two-time Mark Galloway Shootout winner Haeden Plybon continued working his way through the field.

On Lap 59, Stanford and Plybon made contact exiting Turn 4, sending Stanford into the outside wall with heavy front-end damage and bringing his night to an end, while Plybon continued.

Stanford entered the evening third in the championship standings, just six points behind the series lead.

Following the restart, Kevin Harvick and Shepherd battled side-by-side for second before Harvick completed the pass on Lap 63.

Seven laps later, Nash Youngren spun exiting Turn 4 before Dempsey Graham made heavy contact. Graham’s driver’s-side door was torn completely away, exposing the roll cage. Despite the damage, Graham continued while Youngren’s race came to an end.

As the race entered its second half, Shepherd began to lose ground on older tires while Jaron Giannini challenged him for fourth. Just as Giannini completed the pass, another caution slowed the field.

The race was red flagged on Lap 82 after Plybon’s car came to rest along the inside of the backstretch with heavy front-end damage and flames coming from the front of the car. Plybon quickly climbed from his machine, ending his bid for an unprecedented third consecutive Mark Galloway Shootout victory.

“After the last restart I noticed something in the front end gave way, something broke,” Plybon said. “I was just trying to make it to the competition break but it finally just let loose coming out of the corner, I closed my eyes and hoped for the best.”

Despite the disappointment, Plybon immediately turned his attention toward the next race.

“I am done losing, we’re going to victory lane next time”, Plybon said.

Following the competition caution, Keelan Harvick once again pulled away at the front of the field while Kevin Harvick and Shepherd renewed their battle for second with Northwest points leader Ethan Ebert close behind in fourth.

Kevin Harvick eventually cleared Shepherd before setting his sights on Keelan out front.

Behind the leaders, Ebert, Shepherd and Haley Constance found themselves locked in a spirited battle for the final podium position.

With 46 laps remaining, Ebert cleared Shepherd for third before Constance followed him through to move into fourth.

The final caution flew with 16 laps to go after Giannini made contact with the outside wall in Turn 3. Wyatt Gardner also sustained heavy damage while attempting to avoid the incident, ending both drivers’ nights and bringing out a red flag for cleanup.

The final restart set up a father-and-son showdown for the victory.

Kevin Harvick spent the closing laps searching every lane around Evergreen, entering the corners high and low in an effort to pressure Keelan into a mistake. Despite the constant pressure in his mirrors, the younger Harvick never missed his marks.

Kevin closed to Keelan’s rear bumper coming to the checkered flag, but the teenager never wavered, securing his first Pro Late Model victory in the Pacific Northwest.

“I put as much pressure on him as I thought I could and he did a good job,” Kevin Harvick said. “I was trying to go in and out of the mirrors, bottom, top, all over the place to apply the pressure and he just never missed.”

Kevin Harvick also spoke about the importance of remaining composed in high-pressure situations and the progression he has seen from Keelan during his young career.

“It’s super important,” Harvick said. “The further you go along in this, you’re going to get in those moments where it’s just going to be an intense battle like that. And to be able to just keep doing what you’re doing is important and he did a good job.”

While the battle for the win unfolded ahead, Constance completed a last-lap pass around the outside of Ebert to secure third. The 21-year-old Snohomish driver earned her first CARS Tour West podium after seeing a potential top-five finish slip away on the final lap at Tri-City to begin the season.

“It feels great,” Constance said. “Finishing is better than wrecking out of the race and Tri-City was unfortunate, but we knew we had a lot of speed. It’s incredible to get a top three here with all my supporters. These guys come out every night to watch us race on our weekly races. So to do it in front of them specifically, it’s just, it’s an incredible feeling.”

Ebert finished fourth, while Southwest points runner-up Robby Sawyer charged from mid-pack to earn his third consecutive top-five finish of the season.
