Kaden Honeycutt survives several late restarts and tight officiating to win Sunday’s CARS Tour Pro Late Model race at Caraway.
Honeycutt never actually made a green flag pass for the lead. Just shy of halfway he was running third when second place Treyten Lapcevich went up in smoke. Honeycutt lined up alongside race leader Rodney Dowless for the restart. Dowless was called for a restart violation, lining up Mason Walters next to Honeycutt who gets the jump and drives off.
It was smooth sailing until a spin in Turn 1 with 10 laps to go set up another restart. Walters lined up against Honeycutt again and this time Walters was the one getting the jump but like Dowless, he got too good of a jump. Walters was sent back a row leaving Conner Jones to try and steal the win from Honeycutt but it was all for not. Honeycutt drives off to victory.
“My JC Motorsports guys No. 54, they did a really good job,” said Honeycutt “We were good but there is still some stuff I would like to work on more so in the front end, but yeah great car. It was good enough to win today. I appreciate all those guys.”
Whether it’s a Pro Late Model, a Late Model Stock or a Super Late Model, Honeycutt is behind the wheel every weekend, many times double duty like he was at Caraway trying to be better for his day job in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
“I have to combine the Super Late Model and the Late Model Stock together,” said Honeycutt “I have to put the truck arm style stuff to it and also put the speed sensation to it as well but yeah I mean I’ve had a really good truck so far. I can’t complain being second in points.”
After the restart violation, Mason Walters ended his day in the fifth position
“I thought I left at the same time he did,” said Walters “I wasn’t looking at the flag or anything I really just looking over at his front nose to see when it popped up and I thought it popped up and apparently CARS Tour didn’t think it popped up.
“It’s just one of those deals where i guess i jumped the gun a little bit trying to go for the win but still brought home a fifth place finish so it’s nothing to hang your head about.”
With Dowless and Walters both getting popped it spawned the question of whether it is just coincidence or the track.
“Yeah I’m not sure” said Walters “I don’t really have an answer for that. I just think the CARS Tour does a good job of trying to call jump starts.”
“Just a little bit of a mistake,” said Dowless “It’s kind of a weird restart zone cause it’s on the straightaway and every other track on the turn. Nothing bad, just a mistake.”
Dowless rebounded to finish second and Conner Jones rounded out the podium.
