Derek Griffith claims rebound Easter Bunny 150

Saturday was a vintage performance from Derek Griffith in the Easter Bunny 125 at Hickory Motor Speedway.

Reminiscent of the 2021 Twin Easter Bunny 150s, one that was run to make up the canceled race in 2020 in which he led 212 of 300 laps, Griffith this time led the final 134 laps and won by seven seconds over Max Cookson.

It was a satisfying rebound from the rain postponed St Patrick 150 held earlier in the day, a race that Griffith made only 70 laps before going behind the wall.

“We just struggled so much earlier today,” said Griffith in victory lane. “We broke a heim joint in the lower pulling out to the second race. This thing’s been kicking our butt all day. I can’t thank my guys enough. We’ve had a tough couple of years here. To come out and run as well as we did, I’m pumped.”

It’s been a rough couple of years in general for the generally decorated No. 12G team with misfortune and just overall bad finishes across numerous races around the country.

“It’s just momentum, you know,” Griffith said. “We get to go back home, and especially with how bad we were earlier today, to be as good as we were. We’ve got a good piece to go to Thompson, Loudon, Lee, we’ll be all over the place. It didn’t get wrecked by a knucklehead in Florida, so we’re in good shape.”

Garrett Hall, caught up in the controversial late-race fracas in the afternoon’s St. Patrick’s Day 150, came back to finish third. Canadian Maritimes racer Cory Hall was fourth with Jimmy Renfrew, Jr. rounding out the top five.

Ryan Moore, who won the St. Patrick’s Day 150, did not get a chance to sweep both races as he was involved in a heat race incident with Jarrett Butcher, neither car returning for the feature race. Butcher was driving the same car his brother Cole raced earlier in the day.
