With Alex Tagliani driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the NASCAR Truck Series at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course on Sunday, 22 Racing will turn to an emerging stock car prospect to pilot the RONA No. 18 on Saturday’s season opening doubleheader at Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario.

Lapcevich, 16, is the younger brother of 2016 NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion Cayden Lapcevich and the son of veteran racer Jeff Lapcevich.

The younger Lapcevich first tested a Pinty’s Series car last season at both Sunset Speedway and Jukasa Motor Speedway with the intent of making at least three starts in 2020.

That was before the coronavirus pandemic postponed the start of the season.

“I was really excited for this next step in my racing career and for the 2020 season to get underway,” said Lapcevich in a statement. “I have to admit I’m pretty fired up to finally get behind the wheel of NASCAR Pinty’s Series car at Sunset this weekend with the 22 Racing team.”

RECAP and RESULTS: APC Season Opener on Saturday at Jukasa

Lapcevich finished the 2019 season third in the APC Pro Late Model Series with three podiums. He also made a start in the Canadian Short Track Nationals at Jukasa Motor Speedway and finished 15th.

“Thanks to the support of Alex, team sponsors and specifically Qwick Wick, we’re excited to provide this opportunity for Treyten to fulfil his goal of making his NASCAR Pinty’s Series debut in 2020 and to showcase this very skilled young driver,” said 22 Racing Team owner and four-time Pinty’s Series drivers champion Scott Steckly.

In 2016, Tagliani earned his third NASCAR Pinty’s Series win at Sunset and lapped the field in the process. For his part, Lapcevich has countless feature wins at Sunset in various divisions over the past five seasons.

“I’d really like to thank Scott, Alex and all the sponsors for giving me this opportunity,” Lapcevich said. “At the start of this season, I never could have imagined making my Pinty’s series debut filling in for Alex Tagliani. Sunset has always been one of my favorite tracks and hopefully, we can bring home a couple good finishes.”

NASCAR revealed a reduced 2020 NASCAR Pinty’s Series schedule comprised of three twin-125 race weekends starting August 15th at Sunset Speedway with additional stops at Flamboro Speedway and Jukasa Motor Speedway.

  • August 15 Sunset Speedway
  • August 15 Sunset Speedway
  • August 29 Flamboro Speedway
  • August 29 Flamboro Speedway
  • September 12 Jukasas Motor Speedway
  • September 12 Jukasa Motor Speedway
