Cole Powell: We’ll get them on the short tracks

Cole Powell knew going into his rookie NASCAR Pinty’s Series season that the two street courses would be his mulligans this season.

Sure, he’s never road raced either, but street courses are a different matter entirely.

On Saturday on the streets of Toronto, Powell used one of those mulligans with a 12th place finish.

With no practice, only a few qualifying laps and an ill-handling car, Powell and Team HER struggled in the Pinty’s Grand Prix. Troubles began for the team almost as soon as the car was unloaded on Friday morning with ignition issues and rear-end problems preventing the No. 3 from even making a practice lap.

Powell then spun in time trials, but still managed a 10th-place effort. And that’s about the best they could run before finishing P12.

“With the broken rear end, we didn’t get the chance to adjust the car,” said Powell after the event. “The car’s still in one piece. It’s a long day and I’m happy to be out of this car.”

With previous finishes this season of sixth, second and fourth, Powell could afford the finish and is still tied for fourth in the standings and just 14 points behind Andrew Ranger and LP Dumoulin.

Now the series returns to short track racing on the western swing. On July 25 the series will run a double-header at Wyant Group Raceway in Saskatoon before moving on to Edmonton International Raceway in Alberta on July 28.

“We’ll get them on the ovals,” Powell said. “That’s our bread and butter. It is what it is today.”
