Jonny Kievman has been suspended for three races after he entered the racing surface under the red flag and damaged the windshield of Joey Coulter’s car during Saturday night’s Carteret Clash.
Additionally, Kievman has been placed on probation through the end of the season once his suspension is lifted. Joey Coulter’s crew chief, Harold Holly, has also been fined $750 and placed on probation through the remainder of the season as a result of members of the 02 crew running onto the track to confront Kievman.
“The SMART Modified Tour has a responsibility to its competitors, its fans, and the series, to uphold the highest standards of conduct and safety,” Chris Williams said in a series press release on Wednesday. “The safety of our fans, competitors, and officials is paramount. Entering an active raceway or disregarding established rules creates unacceptable risks and we take them seriously.”
The incident took place 14 laps into Saturday’s 99-lap Carteret Clash at the flat, tight confines of Carteret County Speedway in Swansboro, North Carolina. Kievman felt Coulter “divebombed” him going into turn three, ultimately taking him out of the race. When the race was red flagged for cleanup, Kievman ran onto the track and slammed his HANS device against Coulter’s windshield repeatedly, causing damage before members of Coulter’s team rushed to confront him – though Coulter was able to continue.
