SWANSBORO, NC – Just hours after falling just short of victory at New River, Danny Bohn was finally able to seal the deal and score his first career SMART Modified Tour win at Carteret County Speedway on Saturday night.
A late race caution allowed Bohn to surge to the front of the pack when most of the leaders elected to pit for tires. On the ensuing restart, Bohn was able to take the lead as multiple skirmishes took place on the track, including one involving Jonathan Cash and race leader Blake Barney. From there, Bohn was able to check out to score the win just hours removed from a runner-up finish earlier in the day in Jacksonville.
“I’ve wanted to win one of these so bad,” Bohn said in victory lane. “I thought we were done there. When we had that long red flag, it kind of brought back memories of last year when we were leading and had that long red flag. We bust our ass on these cars. We brought two of them this weekend and we’ve been knocking on the door. That’s a third, a second, a second, and a win. We’re going to go celebrate this one a little bit. We needed it… we’re gonna party tonight and hopefully get another win next week at Caraway.”
Jonathan Cash would go on to finish in the runner-up spot. Ryan Newman, who won earlier in the morning at New River All American Speedway, finished third. Luke Baldwin, Carson Loftin, Jonny Kay, Tom Buzze, Jack Baldwin, Bobby Labonte and Joey Coulter rounded out the top-10.
The SMART Modified Tour now looks ahead to its third and final race of the year at Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina. Carson Loftin won at Caraway in March while Bobby Labonte won in July.
Saturday’s single-day doubleheader, which resulted from Friday’s race in Jacksonville being postponed due to lightning and heavy rain, is the first recorded instance of a major asphalt touring series racing at two different tracks on the same day. New River and Carteret, which formed an alliance earlier this season involving schedule alignments and doubleheaders to attract touring series, are located 26 miles apart in North Carolina’s Crystal Coast (Southern Outer Banks) region.
