Bonsignore dominates, sweeps North Wilkesboro and take points lead

Caleb Carter

Five cars. Those are all that were left on the lead lap after Justin Bonsignore dominated the Brushy Mountain Powersports 250 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, sweeping the weekend and taking the NASCAR WHELEN Modified points lead.

Bonsignore had momentum on his side heading into today, winning the SMART Modified Championship race last night just barely over Matt Hirschman. He would start 4th today, but wasted no time getting to the front. By the time the checkers flew, Bonsignore had lapped up to 5th place Luke Baldwin, and won by more than 6 seconds over Matt Hirschman.

“It’s obviously really special,” said Silk after sweeping the weekend. “Last night was amazing riding the elevator, and to pull it off today with such a big lead, it’s really special. These races are not easy to win. [The] guys gave me a great car that ran 150 laps on the same set of tires.”

Bonsignore now unofficially has a 10 point lead over Ron Silk heading into the championship deciding race at Martinsville Speedway next weekend.

“I saw [that] Ron [Silk] didn’t have the best of days. We’ll be able to go into Martinsville controlling our own destiny. We run really well there. I wish we could just head up the road and go run it tomorrow with the streak we’re on. We’ll be working hard on both cars to get them turned around [and] put them in the trailer Friday afternoon. Hopefully we’ll go to Martinsville and put together a really solid day and contend for the win, but at the same time be smart if it comes down to having to points race.”

Ron Silk entered the day with a five point lead over Bonsignore. He qualified right behind him in 6th, but with the long green flag run to end the race, he fell back hard. Silk would finish in 11th, one lap down to Bonsignore. With the 15 point swing, Silk will be behind the eight ball heading to Martinsville.

Silk declined to comment after the race.
