Dirt prodigy Corey Day wins in Late Model Stock debut at Hickory

It’s been a dream start to 2024 for Corey Day in winning a prelim night at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals and earning three wins in the High Limit Sprint Car Series.

Now, in his first night ever driving a Late Model Stock Car on pavement, the 18-year-old prodigy won a feature at Hickory Motor Speedway in the JR Motorsports No. 88.

Day, making his pavement debut finished seventh in the first 40 lap twin, and took advantage of an eight car invert to win in just his second career race.

“It means a lot,” Day said after the race. “These guys worked really hard. We came and practiced yesterday and practiced all day today to get me comfortable. I appreciate everyone at JR Motorsports working hard to get a dirt guy comfortable on asphalt.”

Landon Shane Huffman won the opening 40 lap feature and did it three laps off the Lap 15 restart where he drove under and around Clark Houston.

It was the second win of the season at Hickory for the second generation racing son of NASCAR and short track veteran Shane Huffman.

“It feels good,” the younger Huffman said. “I can’t thank these PRG guys enough. There are some things I think we can improve on and we will before this second one. That was really fun racing with Clark. I didn’t mean to get into him the way I did so I apologize for that.”

Houston harbored no ill-will towards Huffman.

“We had a good race, driving back from sixth, and caught a lucky caution,” Houston said. “We just needed more grip. I tried to back it down to save for this next 40.”
