Skyler Chaney, Michael Bumgarner split Hickory Twin 40s

Skyler Chaney took advantage of a short field but also hard racing in the first half of the day to score his first career Hickory Motor Speedway feature in the second half of a Twin 40 show on Saturday.

“We have tried so hard here and like I told my guys over the radio, we have finally conquered this place,” Chaney said in Victory Lane. “Hat’s off to Travis Byrd for coming down and getting it right. Hendrick Honda. Finally victorious. I told you last week, we’re one spot short, and we were going to get it.

“And here we are.”

Michael Bumgarner won the day cap, and finished third in the night cap, for the best average finish.

That was the race of the day as it took getting by Clark Houston but only after a spirited five lap battle.

“He didn’t make it easy, made me work for it,” Bumgarner said. “Ran me hard but clean and you can’t ask for more than that. That was a good race. I hope the fans enjoyed it. I did.”

Houston enjoyed the racing but doesn’t know what more he could have done to win.

“Oh, I don’t know,” he said. “I think we just got too free there at the end of the race. Heck of a race; enjoyed racing with him. That can’t get better than that.”
