Peyton Sellers clinched his eighth championship at South Boston Speedway on Sunday night, breaking a tie he shared with the legendary David Blankenship for the most all-time at the venerable Virginia bullring.

Entering the race, which was postponed from Saturday to Sunday due to race, Sellers was tied for the season long championship with Trevor Ward with Landon Pembleton just eight back. Then, Sellers and Ward qualified one-two, with Sellers taking the lead on the initial start and led wire-to-wire in a race that went green from start-to-finish.

“When you can beat guys like Trevor Ward, you packed your lunch,” Sellers said in Victory Lane. “That’s why I didn’t do any burnouts or donuts, because I feel like he’s just as much of a champion as we are. He’s had an amazing year. Landon Pembelton had a good year. That’s what racing is all about right there. Trevor put it on us the past couple of races. We went home and worked hard. To go home after the week we had last week, do that much homework and come back, God’s glory was shining on us tonight.”

The season was overall one of the best yet for the 41-year-old from nearby Danville, Virginia.

“It’s a huge accomplishment to get the 8th,” Sellers told Short Track Scene. “David Blankenship was at the track yesterday and he’s always been someone I looked up too. To tie him was very special and to get an eighth was unbelievable. Very blessed to have raced Trevor all season and ended like it did. He has been a true gentleman to race against. This sport is humbling and these days make it all worth while.”

Ward expressed exasperation when it was all said and done.

“I’m just kind of glad it’s over with,” Ward said. “It’s a lot of stress coming up to this. We’ve got a lot of racing left to do. I hate we finished second. Me and Peyton’s raced hard all year, had some great battles, but he just came out on top this time.”

Andrew Grady, Blake Stallings and Pembelton rounded out the top-five.

Sellers’ championships have come across the 2004, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2024 and 2025 seasons, two of which produced NASCAR national championships too.

Under the new for 2025 season Hitachi Energy sponsorship, $20,000 went to the champion, Sellers, with Ward earning $15,000 and $5,000 to Pembleton.

“I have to really thank Hitachi,” Sellers said. “Everyone who worked on this. This is real money. This is what it’s all about. People talk about going Tour racing but to race for this kind of money in our backyard, you can’t beat that.”
