Cody Kelley Survives Protest to Sweep Late Model, Truck Twins

The hometown driver left the Low Country with a lot of hardware.

It took a little bit of time to sort out, but Cody Kelley swept both ends of the Double Day Late Model Stock Twin 40s on Saturday at Florence Motor Speedway.

The delay in making it official was a protest filed after the first race by runner-up Matt Cox over the legality of the engine in the No. 13. Specifically, it took almost four hours to complete a total teardown of the power plant before it cleared inspection and both the prize money and protest cash exchanged hands.

All told, Kelley swept both the Late Model races and Pro Truck races at his home track.

The victory over Cox came to the tune of a 2.159 second margin of victory. But really, it was how Kelley just drove away from Cox down the straightaways that drew the curiosity from the Cox team.

“It’s all gamesmanship,” Kelley told Race22.com after the night of racing concluded. “It is what it is. I protested someone last year and they took it the wrong way. When you leave the race track and go home, you want to know it was fair and square.

“I understand it completely.”

While Kelly drove away from Cox in the first place, third place on back were racing side by side in a big pack while also trying to save their tires for the second race. Brent Crews would win that battle ahead of Lanie Buice and Strom Altman.

Meanwhile, in the second race, Kelley won over Doug Barnes Jr. by Doug Barnes Jr by 1.310 seconds. The race featured a seven-car invert from the results of the first twin. It took 23 laps for Kelley to run through the top-10, including passing Cox, to win the race and finish the clean sweep.

Of note, the races contained 19 cars and thus counted towards NASCAR Weekly Series regional, state and national championship points.
