Katie Hettinger Makes World Series Pro Late History

The winningest female driver at Hickory has won at the World Series

Jason Reasin

Katie Hettinger, 16, made history on Thursday becoming the first woman to win in a Pro Late Model at both New Smyrna Speedway and in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.

Her victory in the Anthony Campi Racing No. 81 came in a 35-lap feature and after a hard-fought battle with Carson Brown in the Rackley WAR Racing No. 25. Hettinger caught Brown with 15 laps to go and made her move with 10 to go, using the bumper, but not completing the pass.

She tried again with nine to go and door slammed Brown on corner entry into Turn 1, something she apologized.

“We had a good car, it wasn’t perfect, it was good, 25 was good, I knew I was going to have be careful with him,” Hettinger said. “And I have to apologize to him for getting into him, but this win was mine tonight.”

Brown was a little salty about the door slam.

“I was just trying to finish the race after we got right turned into the wall on the straightaway,” Brown said. “We’ll just fix it and try again tomorrow.”

To that point, the contact allowed Ryan Luza to finish second, leaving Brown with a podium.

“Rackley WAR has given me a great car and I look forward to getting even better for the 100 lapper tomorrow,” Brown said.

As for Hettinger, the vibes were through the roof.

“It feels freaking amazing,” she said. “Let’s do it again tomorrow.”
