Carson Kvapil is a coming attraction.
The second-generation son of NASCAR veteran Travis Kvapil earned the biggest win of his career on Saturday in the North – South Super Late Model Challenge at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway against some of the best on the East Coast.
As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Kvapil led all 100 laps including the final 41 lap stint with Matthew Craig and Stephen Nasse closing on his bumper over the final laps.
“I got pretty nervous,” Kvapil admitted in victory lane. “I heard ‘about three back,’ and then ‘half back,’ and Matt is one hell of a driver.
“I’m actually really happy because we came here last year for the All-American and were terrible, and then wrecked out. It’s awesome to rebound this year, and we’re really looking forward to the All-American now.”
Kvapil immediately beat Hunter Jack to the backstretch on the first lap and controlled the pace for the remainder of the race.
Craig spent much of the first half working under Jack for second but just couldn’t complete the pass, even upon getting side by side. It wasn’t until the final restart that Craig took the position and began to stalk Kvapil for the win.
He just ran out of time.
“Yeah, we had a good car,” Craig said. “Kvapil was really fast and we have some work to do. We’re getting there. We’re getting better. That’s a good run for us in the Super Late Model. We’ve just got to find some more speed.
Nasse also picked off Hunter Jack on the final restart and finally had race winning speed at the end of the race and believed Jack was leaking fluid that affected the handling of his car until he cleared the No. 41 for position.
“My windshield was covered, and the grip was a handful,” Nasse said. “They told me it wasn’t the 41, so I don’t know. But the car was pretty good and it was a good day for our team.”
It was the first race for Nasse since leaving Jett Motorsports and forming his own program.
The North – South Super Late Model Challenge was co-sanctioned by the Southern Super Series, CARS Tour and Champion Racing Assocation. Before this weekend, Kvapil’s only wins came against Carolina Pro Late Model division competition and in various other Pro Late Model events.
At 15-years-old, Kvapil and his family owned team are only going to get better.
