The ‘Big One’ took place on Lap 93 and completely changed the dynamic of the 50th Snowball Derby.

A variety of contenders including Stephen Nasse, Donnie Wilson, Logan Boyett, Mason Mingus, Preston Peltier, Christian Eckes, Brandon McReynolds, Jake Crum and Derek Kraus all received a variety of damage in the ordeal.

Less than 20 laps prior, many teams elected to pit during a caution, taking new tires. That separated the field into those with new tires and those running on old ones and the difference in speed generated chaos.

On lap 93, Crum and Wilson made contact and created an accordion effect that took out Nasse, Boyett, Mingus, Peltier, Eckes and Kraus and caused McReynolds to spin.

Nasse ended up with his entire front end smashed into the wall on the backstretch and it was a challenge for the wrecker to get the corpse of the car on the back of it. Nasse, thankfully, was able to climb out of the car and was unharmed. Boyett’s car looked like a deconstructed Lego set with the front end in several pieces, ending his day with a heap of metal pieces.

Pole-sitter Peltier’s day ended with front-end damage on his Game of Thrones themed rig, a letdown for the driver who ran the fastest lap of the weekend.

“There’s not much you can do about, it’s just the way this thing goes,” Peltier said. “It was a case of old tires versus new tires, someone got stacked up and we just didn’t have anywhere to go.”

Nasse had issues with his car throughout the weekend and barely made the show on time alone during qualifying.

The wreck was the unfortunate end to a disappointing weekend.

“I saw Wilson get turned around and they all started stacking up behind him, there was really no where I could go, I tried to go underneath it all but unfortunately that’s where most of traffic was going,” he said. “We really struggled all weekend, but it stinks to end it like this.”
