Taylor Mayhew won his second CARS Tour West Super Late Model race of the season Saturday night at Colorado National Speedway, charging late to take the Builders Warehouse 150.
“My first time here in the Super and I was just pacing it,” Mayhew said. “We made a couple adjustments at the break and from there forward I felt like our car was pretty solid. I heard 30 to go, I got by Jace there and then the caution came and thankfully I ended up getting a good restart. It’s kind of just crazy, honestly.”
Mayhew said the plan all night was to ride early and save his tires for the closing laps.
“It’s obviously a good confidence boost going into the next couple races,” Mayhew said. “Vegas was kind of the same deal, just save and save. Kern we unfortunately ran in second, then we had a flat tire with like three to go. Then tonight it was just save until it was go time. I’m just blessed with such a good crew chief who gives me the cards to be able to save and then still be there at the end. I’m just blessed to be in the position.”

Mayhew took the lead from Dylan Bates on a late race restart inside the final 30 laps to secure his second win in the last three races and close the points gap to Jace Hansen.
Michael Scott won pole position earlier in the afternoon and led the field of 21 to the green flag. The caution flew seconds later after Bryce Bezanson and Bruce Yackey got together at the start finish line in what appeared to be a stack up effect coming to take the green, both drivers continued on.
On the restart, Scott and Keelan Harvick battled for the lead, with Harvick leading a few laps on the outside lane before Scott worked back around him to reclaim the top spot.
Twenty laps into the race, Cody Dempster raced his way to the front and took the lead from Scott, bringing Hansen into the mix as well.
Scott began to fade back with a flat right rear tire, eventually coming to pit road and losing multiple laps, ending any chance to contend after starting on pole.
As the race settled in, Bates began working his way through the field after a 14th place qualifying effort. The Missouri native reached the top three by lap 40 and took the lead from Dempster before lap 50.
Bates controlled the pace through the first half, with Hansen moving into second and Darren Robertson up to third.
Bates opened up a near seven second lead, with Hansen now having to hold off a charging Mayhew, who worked his way by Robertson shortly before the work stoppage caution on lap 100.
Under the stoppage on the frontstretch, Robertson’s car began overheating after a rag blocked the grille opening, which his team quickly removed.
Mayhew said under the stoppage that he was riding and saving tires and felt he had a great chance in the final 50 laps.
When the race resumed, Bates and Hansen shared the front row and battled for the lead, with Hansen taking command shortly after the restart.
Smoke began to appear from Hansen’s car as a shock broke while leading. The defending CARS Tour West Super Late Model champion began to lose grip as fluid reached the rear tires, and the damaged shock affected the car’s handling from there.
That allowed Bates to retake the lead, with Mayhew now right behind.
The caution flew again with 27 laps to go after Dylan Zampa and Bezanson spun in Turn 1, both drivers continued on.
On the restart, Bates and Mayhew raced hard for the lead, making contact on the backstretch. Two laps later, Mayhew got to the rear bumper of Bates in Turn 1 and moved him up the track, taking the lead entering Turn 3.

Mayhew led the final 25 laps to secure the win, with Bates finishing second.
“Honestly early on there I wanted to just kind of get in the top 10 and ride,” Bates said. “The further the race went on, the better the car felt, so I just stayed on the bottom and rolled to the front. I’m still kind of speechless about the whole thing. It’s was kind of a whirlwind and definitely the best we’ve run in a touring series event. So we’re pretty stoked.”
After battling the shock failure, points leader Hansen finished third.
“We were pretty good after the restart,” Hansen said. “We got around the No.91 on the top kind of felt pretty good, we got a gap and maintained that. Then all of a sudden smoke started rolling into the cockpit, the left front shock came apart apparently and all the oil flew onto the header and caused a little bit of smoke. I’m confident that if that didn’t happen, we would have been up there battling with Taylor and the 91 the rest of the race. So it’s one of those deals. We’ll get her fixed and head to Washington in a few weeks.”
Harvick faded early to save tires and fought a loose car in the first half, but rallied to finish fourth after a tire pressure change at the break.
Kody Vanderwal raced from seventh to finish inside the top five.
