In many ways, the Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway on March 17 is the signifier that short track racing season is back underway — and it has an entry list to reflect it.

Many of the biggest names in Super Late Model racing are making their way south next weekend, with a handful of the most northern reaches of the country still buried in snow. As a result, the 26-car preliminary entry list features champions and contenders from all corners of the continent.

The Rattler is the season-opener for the Southern Super Series and five of the six champions in tour history have filed their intent to compete. That list includes Bubba Pollard, Stephen Nasse, Casey Smith, Donnie Wilson and Casey Roderick.

Only inaugural season champion, Daniel Hemric, is not represented on the list as he will be racing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway that afternoon.

Speaking of NASCAR, defending race winner Harrison Burton will use an off-week from the Gander Outdoor Truck Series to try to go back-to-back.

The last driver to go back-to-back in the event, Ty Majeski, has also filed an entry after kissing the rattlesnake in 2016 and 2017.

Looking to escape the polar vortex is CRA champion Josh Brock and two-time JEGS Tour titlist Jack Dossey III. ARCA Midwest Tour championship contender Austin Nason will also make the trek south.

The purse has a unique structure. If 25 or less cars show up, it will pay $12,000-to-win and $950 to start. If 26-35 cars show, it will pay $12,500-to-win and 950 to start. With 36 or more cars, the race will pay $13,000 and $959 to start. With each scale, the purse throughout the field increases as well.
